Each Week we send out a weekly e-newsletter. Here is this weeks...
Last week, I seemed to be beset with lots of little modern-day problems.
Firstly, the new printer cartridges were not recognised by the printer. So, the printer would not work, and this required a visit back to the shop to sort the problem.
Secondly when our new Dishwasher arrived, I had paid for Delivery, Installation, and Removal of the old Dishwasher, only part of the Job was done. The Dishwasher arrived and was plugged in, however, on leaving the house I found polystyrene packaging on our drive and the waste hose in our rubbish bin. A real problem as Birmingham City Council are not collecting recyclable rubbish.
Finally, my new wheelchair, for which I had been waiting 5 months, arrived with the wrong cushion and incorrect leg supports. You guessed it another trip back to the supplier.
By the end of the week, I was feeling very disappointed. On Friday, I attended the V.J. 80th commemorations at the National Arboretum I was very pleased that I did, it was a wonderful occasion.
The King, Queen and the Prime Minister were in attendance together with Army Navy and Airforce personnel and invited guest including Veterans of the Burma campaign. The service was very moving. Veterans of the conflict spoke of their time there and the terrible conditions they endured. We heard from Military and Civilians who were held captive during the war. Their conditions were even worse. Some of the most moving stories were from people who were children at the time. The dirt, the illness and the hunger were horrific, and made my modern concerns appear very insignificant.
One really special moment was when a 105year old ex-soldier thanked the King for attending the event especially as the King is receiving cancer treatment. The ex-soldier stated that he had been diagnosed with cancer, but he had been cancer free for the last 25 years. He wished the King all the best and hoped that he would also become cancer free. A true moment of reaching out and giving comfort, the Queen appeared to have a tear in her eye.
All the speakers came back to one theme; the only way their suffering was worthwhile was if the world learns from the conflict and turns to Peace. People must respect each other regardless of their differences. A very true statement in todays troubled times.
On Sunday our service was led by Helen Laird (Synod Children & Youth Development Officer) together with Issac, and Elliot, overseen by Joan. It was excellent.
Afterwards we had a lovely Picnic on the Church field. Faye had organised a Bouncy Castle along with other games for the children. The children really enjoyed the Bouncy Castle as did a certain adult who had a go too! The weather was brilliant and the field looked really good. Several people from the community joined us which was very encouraging.
So, a week that started with disappointments ended very positively.
