Wylde Green United Reformed Church

Making the love of Jesus a reality in the community 7 days a week.

Each Week we send out a weekly e-newsletter. This is this weeks.......

This weekend feels a little manic, even by my standards. We have Pride Parades, Church Meeting, welcome dinners, concerts, discussion groups, hen rehoming and the odd meeting also thrown in! I think there is something for everyone!

At our welcome meals I have been describing us as a community that does many things all linked by the idea of God’s hospitality. That people can attend many things/ do many things each week as part of our Church.  That Church is an umbrella that shelters many things.

With my sabbatical looming, I’ll be spending time thinking and writing about all this and our shifting identity.  The basic premise I’ll be writing about goes something like this…..We are at this odd 500-year crossroads. Looking back over the last 60ish years we’ve been in mourning for a vanishing church. And The New Reformation we’re at the beginning of is starting to look forward and reimagining a more amorphous movement rather than an institution based on what we do rather than what we say we believe.

But in the next few weeks before I go there’s  plenty going on……….as you will see when you read on…..

MARCUS BORG STUDY Evenings 7.30-9pm Vestry

These evenings look at the work of the theologian Marcus Borg and looks at his impact on progressive Christianity.  It is a rerun of the study day that ran before Easter. You can attend as individual session but I would encourage people to make as many as possible.

Sessions are: Who was Marcus Borg and why is he important?  May 27

Why Jesus’s death on the cross matters beyond “Jesus died for your sins”. June 3

Setting the scene. How our own context and history has an impact on our faith. June 10

The Bible is Political, and faith is a journey. June 17

    What are the URC Sessions?

We will be running two sessions for people who either want to know more about the URC and perhaps may be thinking about membership. They will be held on

Friday 23 @ 7pm (simple dinner of curry and rice).

    The sessions look at
  • How to URC works as a denomination
  • How Wylde Green operates and the (vague) direction of travel
  • Q and A session
  • Please book a place by replying to this email or seeing Chris and letting him know.

Funeral Iris Phipps. We will be celebrating Iris’s life Friday 30 May at 11am at Church after a Committal at Streetly Crematorium at 10.15.

    Church Fair 31 May.

The Church Fair is coming up soon.

    Church Holiday 30 June – July 4.

The booking date is approaching. I think it is important to remember that the accommodation is basic but in a very good place for Scarborough’s attractions. We balance accessibility, cost and location. If people feel that it is too basic, people are welcome to find their own accommodation and join in the sessions.

We are also hoping to book a minibus which would give us a more latitude. A day trip to Whitby and a trip to Robin Hood’s Bay and Bempton Puffin sanctuary could be on the cards.

Please fill out the form and return by either handing it to Bev or myself or putting it in the office letter box located outside the office.
